Side column, lined block, or blotter
A calendar with notes is for people who write more than will fit in a day cell. A side column is a grocery list, a call list, or three deadlines that do not belong on a single date. Lined notes under the month are for sentences: a short journal, a meal plan, or minutes from a meeting that used the month as a backdrop.
The compact monthly layout shrinks the day cells and opens a wider band at the bottom. That is a desk blotter: you can still read every date, and you have a place for the week’s mess. Large-box monthly does the opposite—it gives the writing room to the day cells and skips the extra panel.
Notes areas are empty rules. The template does not invent a scoring system or a mood scale. If you need checkboxes, use the weekly checklist. If you need hours, use the hourly week.
Print in portrait for a side column on Letter. Landscape plus a side column can feel tight on the month; try portrait first. Ink-saver gray is readable for notes lines and uses less toner than a dark theme.
Event labels still print inside date cells. Keep those labels short. The notes column is the place for anything longer than a few words.
